A historical view of Figueres

19/03/2019

Figueres

We begin the route around Figueres, devoting time to discovering the old town.

The historical centre of Figueres was shaped during the medieval period, in the 8th century. This urban area is the oldest in the city, the place where the first inhabitants of Figueres settled, due to its natural protection.
In the morning, we recommend a visit to Saint Peter’s Church (Carrer de l’Església 8), which dates back to the year1020.
Midway through the morning, we advise you to visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum (Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí 5, +34.972.677.505 www.salvador-dali.org), as it’s a unique and dreamlike place, as surrealist as the imagination and ingenuity of the man whose name it bears. After visiting the Dalí Museum, we would recommend lunch at the Restaurant Motel (Av. Salvador Dalí i Domènech 170, +34.972.500.562 www.elmotelrestaurant.com).
When you finish lunch you can visit the Toy Museum of Catalonia (Carrer de Sant Pere 1, +34.972.504.585 www.mjc.cat), where you can embark on a journey through the history of the games and toys of your childhood and those of previous generations.
When you leave the Toy Museum of Catalonia, stroll down the Rambla and enjoy the architectural landscape. The Rambla is the central promenade of the city, its most emblematic urban space, the focal point of the shopping area and the axis that links the old heart of the city with the area reflecting the city’s urban expansion
during the 19th and 20th centuries.
For a coffee or snack, we recommend Pastisseria Maia (Plaça de la Palmera 9, +34.972.672.497 www.maiaflequers.com) and Pastisseria Iris (Carrer Caamañó 10, +34.972.502.961). For dinner, we recommend Restaurant Antaviana (Carrer Llers 5-7, +34.972.510.377 www.restaurantantaviana.cat/es). Located in the historic and commercial centre of Figueres, its menu sets out to avoid the tourist clichés. The restaurant is part of the slow food movement.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed the day in Figueres and liked our recommendations. Please don’t hesitate to ask us for more advice.
