The modernist Figueres

Figueres

On this route, if you get up early, you can go to the Plaça del Gra, where a market has been held on alternate days for some 200 years.
We then suggest that you walk up the Rambla, featuring the historical cafés of a city with a republican tradition: the París, the Español and the Royal, where time appears to have come to a halt. On the Rambla you’ll also find the Salleras, Cusí and Cordomí houses, which we advise you to take a look at.
Midway through the morning, we advise you to visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum (Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí 5, +34.972.677.505 www.salvador-dali.org), as it’s a unique and dreamlike place, as surrealist as the imagination and ingenuity of the man whose name it bears.
For lunch, we recommend classic market cooking: the Restaurante Antaviana (Carrer Llers 5-7, Figueres +34.972.510.377 www.restaurantantaviana.cat), a place serving renowned cod and Ripoll-breed lamb.
In the afternoon, you can visit the Empordà Museum (Rambla 2, +34.972.502.305) and learn more about how this land has been shaped: Greek necklaces, Romanesque columns and local painters like Reig and Blanquet, as well as Nonell, Casas, Gargallo and Tàpies, and a first-class location for contemporary art. Midway through the afternoon you can round off your visit at the Parc del Bosc (Avinguda Salvador Dalí 117), the little green lung of Figueres, a noucentista style park with a newly-constructed gazebo that serves great vermouths.
For dinner, we recommend the Restaurante Taverna del Barri Vell (Carrer Tints 7, +34.972.539.419). This is a place with modern decor on its walls, pillars and century- old arches where you can enjoy good tapas and other dishes to share.

We hope this route has allowed you to enjoy your day in Figueres and that you will want to return and learn more about the region.
